There aren’t many country songs with a New Year’s Eve theme. If there are, I didn’t find them. But I was fortunate to discover an entertaining New Year’s Eve-themed song, “Happy Nashville New Year,” written and performed by Charles Esten.

 

It’s a slightly jazzed-up country song with a hint of old “rock and roll,” while still keeping it country! It’s a good song and an energetic performance by sixty-year-old Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native Charles Esten.

 

Who is Charles Esten? Wikipedia lists his occupations as actor, musician, singer, songwriter, and comedian. According to Wikipedia, “Charles Esten played the role of country singer Deacon Claybourne on the drama Nashville from 2012 to 2018, which subsequently kickstarted his own musical career. He also played Ward Cameron on the teen drama series Outer Banks.”

 

I can’t attest to his acting skills (I didn’t watch Nashville or Outer Banks) or his comedic abilities. But his singing and songwriting talents earned him a place in this week’s Essie Country’s 21st Century Real Country Music Song of the Week series. 


As you take down the mistletoe and bring out the champagne for New Year’s Eve, get in the mood for a fun New Year’s Eve by clicking the link below and doing a little two-stepping around your living room floor with your sweetheart. Greetings to fans of real country music.  Essie Country’s 21st Century Real Country Music Song of the Week  “Jupiter” by Camryn Marie for the week of 11/02/25 - 11/08/25 Jupiter by Camryn Marie  Released 04/26/25 Intro by Gene Johns To be honest, I struggled with choosing “Jupiter” as an Essie Country’s 21st Century Real Country Music Song of the Week. Greetings to fans of real country  music, and welcome to this week’s  Essie Country’s 21st Century Real  Country Music Song of the Week, for the week of 11/30/25 - 12/06/25 Watching it Rain by Jesse Raub Jr Released 05/24/2024 Intro by Gene Johns Who would have thought that repeating the phrase “watching it rain” fifteen times in a song would make it a great song? Yes, I counted them. I’m retired, so I have the time to investigate such trivial things.   “Watching it Rain” is a catchy song written by singer-songwriter Joel Shewmake and performed by a real country artist, Jesse Raub Jr. I challenge you to listen to this song a second time and not sing along with “watching it rain.”   Jesse sings about lying in a river and watching it rain.
