Who would have thought that repeating the phrase “watching it rain” fifteen times in a song would make it a great song? Yes, I counted them. I’m retired, so I have the time to investigate such trivial things.
“Watching it Rain” is a catchy song written by singer-songwriter Joel Shewmake and performed by a real country artist, Jesse Raub Jr. I challenge you to listen to this song a second time and not sing along with “watching it rain.”
Jesse sings about lying in a river and watching it rain. I can relate to this song a little. It reminds me of the time I went whitewater rafting in eastern Tennessee.
When we started our six-mile river rafting adventure down the Pigeon River near Gatlinburg, Tennessee, we pushed off in a heavy downpour. With some thunder and lightning close enough to cause concern, it made me wonder, “What in the hell am I doing?” (Not that I wasn’t already thinking that.)
Well, it wasn’t hell I was in. It was an exciting whitewater river trip in Tennessee with nature’s added special effects. As we navigated through the rapids, we couldn’t help but watch it rain (it was in our face) while whitewater rafting down the river. That was the first time since my childhood that I was out in the rain without an umbrella or a raincoat. It was awesome!
You don’t need to raft down a Tennessee whitewater river in the rain to appreciate Jesse Raub Jr’s performance of “Watching It Rain.” It’s a great song and a standout performance. And if you want, you can make listening to “Watching it Rain” a little more fun by counting how many times Jesse sings “watching it rain.” Let me know if I miscounted.
